While Kardashian, 31, headed to Australia for a long planned commitment, Humphries fled L.A. as well, heading for for the familiar territory of Minnesota, where he grew up and much of his family resides.
"He's getting through it day by day," says a source. "It's a tough situation."
While off the court during the NBA lockout, Humphries, 26, is staying focused on fitness and headed back to a local Minnesota gym Thursday, "for the first time," notes the source.
And as for all the backlash?
"It's not an easy position for anyone," says the source. "He's a gentleman and wants to make things right – the ring and any gift he gave her was out of love and he doesn't expect them back."
"He has made concerted efforts to try and return the gifts to their guests. They're figuring it all out."
Meanwhile, Kardashian is departing Australia shortly, canceling the Melbourne leg of her trip.
"She just couldn't handle it," a source tells PEOPLE. "This was in no way an easy thing for Kim to do and it's not easy on her now."
