Extra vitamin E linked to prostate cancer, but diet still merits study

Taking vitamin E supplements appear to increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer, according to a study that appears in the Oct. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
A multi-institutional team of researchers reported findings from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), a study begun in 2001. They found that men age 50 and older who took 400 units of vitamin E daily were diagnosed with prostate cancer at a 17 percent higher rate than men who popped placebos.
UCSF’s June Chan, ScD, is no stranger to studies of dietary supplements and cancer that turn out to be a bust, including studies of vitamin E.
Earlier, as a graduate student, Chan investigated vitamin E. Working with Harvard epidemiologist Walter Willet, she found no epidemiological evidence that vitamin E prevented prostate cancer in men generally. However, the researchers did see a trend toward fewer prostate cancers in smokers.
Chan remains optimistic about identifying dietary and lifestyle interventions that prove beneficial to health.
“Healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, not smoking, and avoiding overweight and obesity remain important tools for us to prevent several major chronic diseases,” she says.
Disappointing Clinical Trials for Vitamins
Supplements, despite promising signs from earlier epidemiological studies, have fared poorly in controlled clinical trials, in which participants are randomly assigned to different treatment arms. These controlled clinical trials remain the gold standard by which to evaluate any health claims.
An early disappointing milestone in anti-oxidant supplement research was a 1994 study of vitamin E and beta-carotene as a means to lower lung cancer risks among smokers. Daily supplementation with 50 units of Vitamin E had no benefit, while beta-carotene was associated with an increased risk for lung cancer.
However, in that same clinical trial researchers observed that there were more than 30 percent fewer cases of prostate cancer and prostate cancer deaths among the men who took the vitamin E supplements. This association spurred interest in launching the SELECT trial, focused specifically on prostate cancer.
Although there were more cancers among men in SELECT who took supplements, it’s too soon to say whether or selenium supplementation will lead to more prostate cancer deaths among the study participants, Chan says. More cancers does not necessarily mean more deadly cancers.

“The majority of these cancers were earlier-stage disease detected by PSA screening. It is likely that a fair proportion of these are indolent tumors – meaning cancers that would not cause morbidity or mortality if left undiagnosed.”
The study is another reminder that more is not always better, Chan says. “Supplements are not the same as eating a healthy diet,” she adds.
Prostate Cancer Outcomes and Lifestyle
For several years Chan has been working with UCSF urologists to investigate whether lifestyle factors can affect cancer outcomes and quality of life in prostate cancer patients.
There will be nearly 241,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States in 2011, and more than 33,000 men will die of the disease, according to American Cancer Society estimates.
“It has become increasingly important to identify what aspects of diet, exercise, or other lifestyle practices may improve cancer survivorship,” Chan says.
“Prostate cancer is often a relatively slow-growing tumor – compared to tumors that arise in other organs. We wanted to address the question of whether even after diagnosis, lifestyle changes could have an impact – especially because a cancer diagnosis often motivates people to make changes.”
Chan’s recent research has supported this hypothesis. With colleagues at UCSF and at Harvard, she reported that among men diagnosed with prostate cancer localized within the gland, eating poultry without the skin, red meat and fish was not associated with worsening disease. However, in the same study eating eggs or poultry with skin might have increased the likelihood that prostate cancer would worsen.
Chan led another study in which men with low-risk prostate cancer were assigned to take supplements of fish oil or lycopene – an anti-oxidant found in tomatoes. The supplements activated genes in metabolic pathways in the prostate gland that affect sex hormones. Sex hormones drive prostate cancer, and these results help researchers understand how diet may influence whether tumors form and how they grow, Chan says.
In a larger study of men with prostate cancer, Chan found that prostate cancer was about 60 percent less likely to advance further in those who ranked in the top 25 percent in reported consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale.
Other lifestyle factors, including smoking and exercise, also matter for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.Biking, playing tennis, jogging, or swimming for more than three hours every week may substantially lessen the likelihood of dying from the disease, Chan found.
Even milder forms of exercise, such as brisk walking, were associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer recurrence in one of Chan’s studies, and with reduced risk of dying from any cause.
On the other hand, in another study smoking at the time of diagnosis was associated with greater overall mortality and more heart disease deaths – not a surprise. But smoking also was associated with a higher likelihood of dying from prostate cancer.
“Our results reaffirm the benefits of non-smoking, exercise, and eating vegetables not just for overall health, but also for prostate cancer,” Chan says. “While these are recommendations that patients can act on themselves, we also hope to use our data to understand the biology of better, so that we can develop better therapeutics and management strategies.”
Reported Supplement Consumption Associated with Death in Women
In another study of supplements that appeared in the Oct. 10 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers found that women who reported taking any of a variety of vitamins and minerals – multivitamins, vitamins B6 and folic acid, iron, magnesium, zinc and copper – were more likely to die. Calcium supplements were associated with lower mortality in the study.
“This study was observational in nature and while it generally underscores the importance, again, of getting nutrients mainly from a balanced diet rather than from supplements, it is also challenging to interpret because of the way the study was designed,” Chan says.
“The study was unable to completely account for the possibility that women who felt bad because of some underlying illness may have started to take more without a clear diagnosis.
“It will be interesting to see the results of the Physicians Health Study II, which is a randomized clinical trial examining multivitamins versus placebo for mortality outcomes. This study will be reported on in the near future.”

Serious Effects of Pollution on Health

All scientists are now confident that air pollution remains one of the main environmental problems in cities and that current levels of pollution are still affecting the health of urban populations.
Traffic is primarily responsible for the air pollution, caused by nitrogen oxides and suspended solid particles generated by combustion engines and other mechanical aspects of wear.
About 50% of emissions of nitrogen oxides in these urban areas are produced by cars. According to studies in several cities, traffic is also responsible for 50% of average annual levels of particulate matter.
But how does all this affect our health?
Many studies have been conducted on the effects of air pollution on our health and some scientists have reported that:
1. People living near areas with higher traffic have more respiratory symptoms, infarction and reduced life expectancy. In fact, the co-director of the Center of Environmental Epidemiology stated that “in situations of high exposure it was observed that deaths have increased by 11%”.
2. The frequency of children who have symptoms of bronchitis is higher among those living near busy urban roads compared to those living in low-traffic areas, as has been demonstrated in several European cities.
3. Among women who are pregnant living in higher traffic areas have more babies weighing less than expected.
4. Children who grow up in areas with higher traffic intensity show a slowing in the growth of lung capacity compared with children living in less polluted areas.
And if this were not enough …
There are a number of epidemiological studies showing that exposure to air pollution in the short term are associated with increased acute respiratory symptoms. These can range from irritation to death.
Children, are a particularly vulnerable segment of the population…..
The fetus and young child have a special vulnerability to environmental toxins compared with the adult, due to differences in exposure, physiologic immaturity and living longer after exposure.
Conclusion…..
Traffic is a major source of air pollution. Millions of people who are commuters, ride bikes or walk are directly exposed to these emissions. The population is also affected by secondary pollutants formed from traffic emissions. In addition, this adversely affects the health of children and adults.
The most significant effects are short-term irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, respiratory infections, and asthma attacks. The important effects on long-term health include a slower lung development in children, chronic respiratory diseases, lung cancer, heart disease and even potential damage to the brain and other organs.
The whole population is exposed to the pollution but not all the same way. Some are more sensitive than others. Young children and the elderly suffer most from the effects of air pollution as well as people with health problems.
Many examples have shown that sustained improvements in air quality lead to big health benefits. Given the dominant role of vehicles as a source of air pollution, the use of cleaner cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses will be of great benefit to public health.

Car Tips : Use Less Fuel and Lower Pollution

We are polluting our planet each and every day, and each day the amount of pollution we are producing keeps growing. We have already caused harm to our ozone layer and measures need to be taken to help ensure that that our planet will be able to make it through. Therefore, here are some tips that you can put into action in order to reduce the pollution generated by your car on a regular basis.

One critical step you can take is to appropriately blow up your tires. This may seem a little peculiar however let me explain. Any time your tires are low on air you are not receiving the maximum fuel usage that you would be getting if your tires were correctly inflated. It comes down to friction, the less air your tires possess, the more of the tire is making contact with the terrain causing you to have to provide the car more gas to maintain your velocity. And by using more gas, you are making more smog. When your tires are inflated correctly you will be using much less gas and creating far less pollution.

Remember to give your family car a tune up each year. Many people today don’t comprehend the magnitude of this. Each year replacing your spark plugs and electrical wires will help your car to run better. When your spark plugs get old and worn out they cause your car to produce more by-products or pollution. Which additionally means you’re not getting the greatest gas mileage. You are able to keep your car in far better running order and also create lower amounts of pollution by changing your spark plugs a minimum of once per year.
Many people neglect to change their engine oil. You can find people who change their oil after every 3000 miles and there are people who actually may just change it annually. Through keeping your car’s oil clean, you are keeping your car functioning properly and thus, yet again you will be getting much better gas mileage and reducing pollution. If you change your very own oil take care to properly recycle the used oil. Any neighborhood mechanic or auto store should be able to recycle your used oil. And they are certainly not allowed to charge you a service charge for this, so because it’s free please recycle your used oil.
There are other little things you can accomplish to also help lessen your pollution and save fuel. One thing is to make certain you have a nice and clean air filter in your vehicle. A fresh and clean air filter can easily help increase gas mileage. You should additionally keep your automobile thoroughly clean. You’ll experience less wind resistance when your car is clean. Therefore by keeping your car spotless not only can you enhance your gas mileage a little, your car will furthermore end up lasting you longer. And when your car lasts for a longer time, less cars are being created and less pollution is being created from the creation of new cars.

Caffeine linked to woman’s fertility

A new study finds that as little as two cups of coffee a day can impair a woman’s fertility.
Researchers from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in the US found that caffeine could impair fertility in women by relaxing the cells of the muscles in the fallopian tubes, which carry a woman’s eggs from her ovaries to her womb.
“Caffeine inhibits the contractions of the muscles in the fallopian tube, so the egg stops getting transported,” study researcher Sean Ward told health website MyHealthNewsDaily.
Ward and his team tested the effect of caffeine on mice, which he said are similar reproductively to humans. The study didn’t give specifics on how much caffeine may impact fertility, but the amount they tested in their research was about the equivalent to two cups of coffee for humans.
“This provides an intriguing explanation as to why women with high caffeine consumption often take longer to conceive than women who do not consume caffeine,” stated Ward in a release.
Past research had also made the link between caffeine and fertility problems. A 1993 study found that drinking more than “moderate amounts” of caffeine can lower a woman’s likelihood of conceiving by as much as 27 percent. How much caffeine was too much? Drinking more than two cups of coffee a day, or 200 milligrams of caffeine. Also in this same study, women who drank as little as one cup of coffee a day lowered their chances of getting pregnant by 10 percent.
If you’re trying to get pregnant and having trouble, talk to your doctor about your caffeine consumption and how it might be affecting you. Caffeine affects everybody in different ways, and therefore may affect people’s fertility differently, Ward stated to MyHealthNewsDaily.

Brain Cancer

Brain cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in the brain cells, both derived from cells of the brain itself (primary brain cancer) or from other organs that spread to the brain (secondary or metastatic brain cancer). Some types of brain cancer known include glioma, meningioma, pituitary adenoma, vestibular schwannoma, and medulloblastoma.
Unlike other types of cancer, brain cancer rarely spreads to other tissues so that the classification is based only on how fast the growth of cancer cells. Stage I means the cancer cells still appear normal and slow growth, while stage IV means the cancer cells look abnormal and grow very fast.
National Cancer Institute estimates that each year there are 22,000 new cases of brain cancer worldwide. Death rate is quite high, which is about 13,000 per year.
Causes of Brain Cancer
Secondary brain cancer is caused by the growth of cancer cells in other tissues are spread to the brain. Most types of cancer that spread to the brain include breast cancer, colon cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer and skin cancer.
Meanwhile, primary brain cancer is caused by structural changes Nucleid Deoxyribo Acid (DNA) so that the growth is uncontrolled. Trigger changes in DNA are not known for sure, but suspected that many factors affect, among others, radiation, cigarette smoke and certain viral infections.

Car with Hybrid Technology Help to Reduce The Pollution

Hybrid technology was developed in 1665, when Jesuit and Ferdinand made a four -wheel vehicle that could run by steam when pulled by a horse. This vehicle could reach speeds of up to sixty miles per hour. In these vehicles, it was difficult to maintain enough speed for a long distance. In the twenty-first century, new improvements had been made in hybrid technology, and companies have made advanced hybrid technology and created new cars. Toyota introduced its first four-door Sedan in 2000. After that, Honda introduced Honda Civic hybrids. In September, Ford introduced the Escape hybrid, which is its first American hybrid. Now, hybrid cars have become very popular.
Hybrid cars do not use gasoline when they idle. They use both fuel and electric power and use less energy when compared to other fuel-generated vehicles. The batteries of hybrid cars are made of thousands of hundreds of cell. These are operated differently, depending on your mode. This type of car combines the power of an electric motor with a gasoline engine. It is often presented as a transitional technology. On the road, the primary power source is the internal engine. When maximum power is required, the electric motor is used to assist maximizing the power for a short period. Sometimes, the engine is switched off when the car is stationary, reducing curbside emissions.
Is is important for anybody in the market for a hybrid car to remember that many hybrid vehicles have two engines. These cars usually use two sources of power. As described by the Lexus LS 600h’s makers, hybrid cars are the world’s first luxury Saloon, with large, high-output electric motors and a five liter, V8 petrol engine. These cars are as safe any other vehicles in their class. Hybrid cars have great mileage, but their purchase price is high in comparison to conventional vehicles that are also fuel -saving and green.
It is necessary that the batteries of hybrid car are replaced after every six years. This is a very important maintenance practice. Hybrids run on a combination of two power sources. First, hybrids run on normal but high-power gas engines designed to get maximum power to increase the mileage, using the minimum amount of fuel. Some hybrid trolley buses can use on-board diesel engines and overhead electric power, depending on conditions. This will combine with the battery subsystem to create a plug-in hybrid trolley buses. Hybrid cars are very high priced as compare to other vehicles.
Using hybrid electrical cars may help to reduce the pollution in the environment. These cars have helped to save our atmosphere from damage. Hybrid car manufacturers make more improvements in order to reduce the overhauling cost and to increase the mileage and drive capacity for people. Hybrids have special tires, which are more inflated than regular tires which are made of a rubber compound and have lower rolling resistance while retaining acceptable grip on the road. With all these advantages, with the rate offered by companies, it will not be surprising to find the modern household owning at least one hybrid car in the next ten years.

Handphone can increase the risk of cancer

It is undeniable that in this digital age, where Handphone (mobile phones or mobile phones) have become a way of life, even in Indonesia.Regardless of the lower classes and the rich, Handphone has become a necessary element in any time. Handphone is also very useful especially in terms of communication.

Maybe we found that radiation from the signal generated by Handphone could cause cancer or other diseases. A Swedish study found that Handphone can increase the risk of cancer 400% of its users.
International EMF (electromagnetic fields) collaboration report the results of research conducted in 13 Western European countries that the radiation affecting the impact of Handphone on health, especially the health of children. Collaboration EMF researcher Lloyd Morgan says:
A number of countries are willing to block the use of Handphone for children, even France has been instructed to use Handphone for children is only used to send messages only.
Morgan also revealed that the conversation with Handphone in the long run increases the risk of a child or adolescent suffering from brain cancer. In addition to bagging a Handphone pocket or sleep membiatkan children near an active Handphone can also interfere with health.
In fact, the use of Handphone is very useful for human life, live now, how to regulate their use, do not overdo it, which if done to excess will result in a commodity.

The Philippines government warned using geckos to treat AIDS

The Philippines government warned on Friday that using geckos to treat AIDS and impotence could put patients at risk.
Environmental officials expressed alarm about the growing trade in the wall-climbing lizards in the Philippines. An 11-ounce gecko reportedly sells for at least $1,160.
Prices skyrocketed in the central Philippines Gecko due to the many who want to buy it as a remedy to cure various diseases. A Gecko’s tail measuring 300 grams for example, the price could reach 50,000 pesos or approximately USD $ 9.9 million.
Hunter Gecko emerging as surprise besides sold domestically, Gecko Philippines also exported to China, Malaysia and South Korea. Citizens in these countries believe Gecko as a panacea for Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and impotence.
Nevertheless, the Philippine Government through the Ministry of health warns that such benefits have not been scientifically proven. In addition to not necessarily efficacious, it is feared many give precisely Gecko leih negative effects for patients with mengonsumsinya.
“Gecko can worsen the overall health and get them (the patients) are in high risk,” wrote the Department of health Philippines as quoted from the Philipine Star, Friday (15/7/2011).
Not described in more detail the risk of what is meant, but obviously it’s been a lot of other drug available that is more secure to overcome impotence. While it doesn’t yet exist for AIDS drugs to cure it, but it can be controlled so as not to cause death.
In addition to endangering the patient, the consumption of Gecko en masse can also harm the environment. One of the officials of the environment in the Philippines, Mundita Lim said the declining population of Gecko can cause an imbalance of the ecosystem.
“In nature, Gecko eats insects. Certain species are larger in size even able to eat birds and rodents that are pests for farmers, “says Lim.

Maintaining Bone Health

When we are young, the formation of new bone cells faster than the destruction of old bone so that bone density is still awake. After 30 years of age that occurred the destruction of old bone cells faster than the formation of new bone cells. The higher bone density, the less likely to have osteoporosis that is, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle.
understand how diet, physical activity and other lifestyle factors can help maintain bone health.

There are several factors that affect bone health, among others:
1. The amount of calcium in food intake
Low calcium intake of foods that cause reduced bone density, early bone loss and increased fracture risk.
2. Levels of physical activity
A person with low physical activity have a higher risk of osteoporosis than active.
3. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
Research shows that smoking can be one factor that causes bones to become more brittle. If you consume more than two bottles of alcoholic drinks a day can increase the risk of osteoporosis, as alcohol can impair the body's ability to absorb calcium.
4. Gender factors
Women have less bone tissue than men.
5. Age factor
The older the bones are thinner and fragile.
6. Factors of race, body mass index, and genetic
The biggest risk is the Mongoloid race (Asian). Low body mass index (19 or less) also had a greater risk. In addition, having a parent or sibling with osteoporosis also have a greater risk (genetic factors).
7. Hormonal factors
Formation of too much thyroid hormone can cause bone fragility. In women, bone fragility increases drastically at menopause as estrogen levels decline. Amenorrhea (no menstrual period before menopause) in the long run, it also increases the risk of osteoporosis. In men, low testosterone levels can cause loss of bone density.
8. Eating disorders
People suffering from anorexia or bulimia have a high risk of experiencing bone fragility. Moreover, gastrectomy (one procedure in abdominal surgery), weight loss surgery and Crohn's disease, Celiac disease and Cushing's disease can affect the body's ability to absorb calcium.
9. Use of certain medications
Long-term use of corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, cortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone can cause bone damage. Other drugs associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis include: long-term use of aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer, antidepressant drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), treatment with the cancer drug methotrexate, some anti-seizure medications, the acid-blocking drugs the so-called proton pump inhibitors and antacids containing aluminum.
What can be done to maintain bone health?
Measures to prevent damage to the bone, among others:
1. Increasing the calcium content in food intake
For adults (age 19-50 years) and men aged 51-70 years, the Institute of Medicine recommends 1,000 mg of calcium per day.
Recommendation to increase to 1,200 mg per day for women aged over 51 years and men aged over 71 years.
Calcium is found in almonds, broccoli, kale, canned salmon, sardines, and soybeans and processed products (tofu and tempeh). If you find it difficult to get enough calcium from the daily diet, consult your doctor about calcium supplements.
2. Consider the intake of vitamin D
For adults (age 19-70 years), the Institute of Medicine recommends 600 IU (international units) of vitamin D a day. Recommendation to increase to 800 IU a day for adults (aged over 71 years).
3. Make sure it has enough physical activity every day
Physical activity such as walking, jogging, tennis, and climbing stairs can help the body build strong bones and slows the process of bone fragility.
4. Avoid smoking and drinking no more than two alcoholic drinks a day.
5. Consider the use of drugs
A number of medications available to help slow the process of bone breakdown and maintain bone density, including bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva) and raloxifene (Evista). If taking any medications that affect bone health, consult your doctor. Doctors will monitor bone density and may recommend other drugs to help prevent bone damage.
6. Consideration of hormone therapy for women
Estrogen therapy, mainly initiated immediately after menopause, may help maintain bone density. However, use of hormone therapy may increase the risk of blood clots, endometrial cancer and possibly breast cancer. Consult your doctor if need hormone therapy.
If you are concerned with bone health or osteoporosis risk factors, consult your doctor. Doctors may recommend a bone density test. The test results will help doctors measure the bone density and determine the extent of bone damage that has occurred.

‘Super tomatoes’ can reduce the risk of cancer

LONDON: British researchers claim to have developed new " super tomatoes" fortified with minerals which can improve your immune system and help prevent cancer.

The new varieties, which have hit shelves across the UK, have been enriched with selenium, a powerful anti-oxidant which the researchers believe could not only boost the immune system but also help prevent cancer.

The mineral, found naturally in foods such as Brazil nuts, shellfish and liver, is also important for the thyroid gland, which determines how quickly the body uses energy and also produces proteins, the Daily Mail reported.
Food scientists turned their attention to the mineral because it is lacking in UK diets.

Low concentrations in farm soil means little of the mineral finds its way into home-grown foods.
There is evidence that a deficiency may lead to heart disease and, while it does not tend to directly cause illnesses , it can make the body more likely to catch infections.

Dr Carina Norris, of the Nutrition Society, said the tomatoes were a great way to get the nutrient into our diets.
"Selenium plays an important role in supporting the immune system, and it's thought that getting adequate selenium reduces our risk of cancer ," she said.

"But many people in the UK don't get enough from their diets — the latest data suggests the average person consumes well below the target of 60mg for women and 75mg for men. "So to get a 'difficult' nutrient into food that most eat — such as tomatoes — has to be a good thing."

The new tomato follows Vitamin D milk, yoghurts and juice it has developed to tackle health problems.

Coffee reduces liver cancer risk

Coffee reduces liver cancer risk: Study

A study involving ethnic Chinese residents of Singapore found that drinking three or more cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of liver cancer by 44 per cent, The Straits Times newspaper reported Saturday.
Researchers at the Department of Epidemiology of the National University of Singapore suggested two oils found in coffee beans, cafestol and kahweol, have liver—protecting properties.
The research — begun in 1993 and involving more than 63,000 ethnic Chinese men and women aged 45 to 74, populations considered at higher risk of liver cancer — added to a growing body of evidence contradicting the long—held notion that coffee is bad for the health.
Associate professor Koh Woon Puay, who was involved in the study recently published in the US journal Cancer Causes and Control, said the finding meant coffee drinkers could now worry less about liver cancer.
“Coffee has often had to fight its bad image, compared with tea, which is often portrayed very positively,” Koh was quoted as saying.
But a study by her team on green tea drinking found that it had delivered no protection against the disease.
A 2008 coffee—drinking study found that drinking four or more cups a day might lower the risk of diabetes by 30 per cent.

How can Air Pollution make Your Brain is Bad, Forgetful, Slow, or Depressed ?

In the new study, mice were exposed to either filtered air or polluted air. The polluted air contained fine particulate matter, the kind of pollution created by cars, factories, and natural dust. After breathing the air six hours a day, five days a week for 10 months--nearly half the lifespan of the mice--the animals were given a variety of behavioral tests.
In a learning and memory test, mice were placed in the middle of a brightly lit arena and given two minutes to find an escape hole leading to a dark box where they feel more comfortable. They were given five days of training, but the mice who breathed the polluted air took longer to learn the location of the escape hole. They were also less likely to remember the site of the escape hole when tested later.
In another experiment, mice exposed to the polluted air showed more depressive-like behaviors than did the mice that breathed the filtered air. The polluted-air mice also showed signs of higher levels of anxiety in one test, but not in another.
hippocampus
The hippocampus, which lies deep within the brain, is important to learning, memory, and mood.
How might air pollution lead to these changes? The researchers studied the hippocampal area of the mice brains looking for answers.  Lead author of the study and a doctoral student in neuroscience at Ohio State University, Laura Fonken said "We wanted to look carefully at the hippocampus because it is associated with learning, memory, and depression," .
The researchers looked specifically at branches, called dendrites, that grow from nerve cells. Dendrites have small projections growing off them called spines, which transmit signals from one neuron to another. The researchers found that the mice that breathed polluted air had shorter dendrites, fewer spines, and overall reduced cell complexity compared to the clean-air mice.

A and B are dendrites. Notice the small spines.
The differences may be a result of inflammation. "The hippocampus is particularly sensitive to damage caused by inflammation," Fonken said. "We suspect that the systemic inflammation caused by breathing polluted air is being communicated to the central nervous system. . . . This could have important and troubling implications for people who live and work in polluted urban areas around the world."

Many people look for Gecko, it is because Gecko is believed to cure various diseases. Since there are many who are looking for, these geckos too expensive. What are the properties of gecko meat that can reliably cure the disease?
Benefits gecko meat packaged in the form of food or powder believed to cure various diseases like skin diseases, asthma and also increases stamina men. But until now no studies are definitely capable of showing the efficacy of treatment using these geckos. Gecko been reported in clinical practice (trials to living things) that showed a positive effect on malignant tumors.
A research team led by Prof. Wang from Henan University of China had reported this. The findings were published in World Journal of Gastroenterology. But there is noresearch on pharmacological studies (the study of interactions between drugs, systems and processes of life) from the gecko, that its mechanism of action as anti-tumor remains unclear.
From the results of clinical practice report that was published by Medicalnewstoday, Gecko can not only strengthen the immune system of an organism, but also can induce tumor cells opoptosis namely tumor cells that can destroy himself. In clinical practice, the team of researchers used mice that female gender. In addition gecko also believed to decrease the activity of VEGF and bFGF protein. These proteins affect the growth of cancer cells. Impact of increasing immune system is detected based on thymus gland that can produce immune cells in the neck, pagosit and spleen cells. Well known to the decrease of VEGF and bFGF protein expression, and improvement of apoptotik cells that can kill  tumor cells.
Currently the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently doing research on the efficacy of the meat and skin geckos which are believed to cure the disease of AIDS, asthma and various other skin diseases. This is to determine if these treatments are truly effective or not, and to see is there any side effects that might arise.
